US auto giant Tesla said it would assist Chinese police in an investigation into a collision with one of its Model Y cars, after local media reported that two people died and three others were injured when the driver lost control of the car.
According to a report by Jumo News, the accident that occurred on November 5 in Guangdong Province, southern China, killed a motorcyclist and a high school student, with a video clip of a car traveling at high speed hitting other vehicles and a cyclist.
"Police are currently seeking third-party assessments to determine the truth behind this incident, and we will actively provide any necessary assistance," the electric car maker, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, told Reuters in a letter on Sunday, warning against believing "rumours."
China is the second largest market for Tesla cars, and the accident was among the top topics on the social networking platform Weibo.
The Jimo News report quoted traffic police as saying that the cause of the accident, which occurred in Chaozhou City, has not yet been determined, and that an unnamed member of the driver's family (55 years old) said he had problems with the brake pedal when he was about to stop in front of a family store.
Tesla said the videos showed that the brake lights were not visible when the car was speeding, and that its data showed problems such as the driver not applying the brakes throughout the car's journey.
Tesla has previously faced allegations of defective brakes in China. The company said in its statement to Reuters that a court ordered a Chinese car owner to make a public apology and compensate the company after ruling that comments he made to the media about problems with the car's brakes were inconsistent with the facts and had damaged Tesla's reputation.
One of the people with the authentication mark on the Chinese platform Weibo, which is similar to Facebook, said in a post titled "Member of the driver's family" that the driver lost control in the last 2 and a half kilometers, and although he tried to apply the brakes, it appears that a technical problem caused the accident.
Tesla cars face several criticisms related to a number of defects that lead buyers to search for another alternative, including those related to luxuries and what is more dangerous than that and has to do with the safety of the driver and pedestrians.
And whoever owns a new Tesla car knows how much the repairs will cost if they are not covered by insurance or the car warranty, and this is one of the reasons for the high insurance ceiling on these vehicles.
Despite this, not everything that Tesla offers in its cars is of bad quality, and there are many indications that the company uses materials of lower quality. Proof of the durability of cars is in the longevity of the car parts, the duration of the appearance of knocks, unwanted sounds, and other common problems.
